Drying niches of aquatic macroinvertebrates identify potential biomonitoring indicators in intermittent and ephemeral streams

چکیده
Intermittent rivers and ephemeral streams (IRES) compose the majority of draining networks on Earth, supporting a unique fraction biodiversity. Despite their high ecological value, IRES are increasingly threatened by global change require appropriate biomonitoring restoration tools. However, indices indicators used in routine programs often confounded drying effects. This occurs because most pollution-sensitive taxa lost over gradients, limiting utility current tools IRES. To address this challenge, there is need to evaluate which should be calculate metrics different portions gradient. Here, using high-resolution data from 33 unpolluted streams, we explored preferences macroinvertebrates identify potential as do this, characterized macroinvertebrate niches identified those with resistance sensitivity preferences. Next, evaluated capacity functional traits predict specialization affinity. Finally, for IRES, how influenced density, relative abundance richness drying-sensitive drying-resistant niches. Our results three groups (partly tolerant, generalist specialist taxa) one group taxa. We also found that had limited represent differences niches, shredding trophic body size showing strongest correlations. In addition, observed were less intensity than some partial (e.g., Lepidostoma), moderate Corduliidae) or tolerance Nemoura) can serve Taken together, our demonstrate characterizing useful strategy developing highlighting limitations taxonomic trait-based approaches.

Aquatic Macroinvertebrates and Water Quality Characteristics in Five Wetland Types: Preliminary Results on Biomonitoring
In southwest Georgia, wetlands can be classified based on source of inundation and vegetation. Depressional wetlands are inundated predominantly through rainfall and are identified as grass-sedge marshes, cypress savannas, and cypress-gum swamps. Riparian sloughs, composed of cypress and gum, occur along river corridors and are flooded when rivers are at high flow. During 1998-2000, we sampled ...
متن کاملDiscontinuous ephemeral streams
Many ephemeral streams in western North America flowed over smooth valley floors before transformation from shallow discontinuous channels into deep arroyos. These inherently unstable streams of semiarid regions are sensitive to short-term climatic changes, and t’o human impacts, because hillslopes supply abundant sediment to infrequent large streamflow events. Discontinuous ephemeral streams a...
متن کاملIdentification, Distribution and Abundance of Macroinvertebrates and Biomonitoring of the Ghale Rudkhan River, Guilan Province
Benthic macroinvertebrate-based indices are suitable tools for assessment of stream health and human impacts on its biological integrity. Since Ghale Rudkhan River is an attractive tourist destination and its surrounding population is growing, its water quality was examined usning biological indicators. Macroinvertebrate samples were taken monthly by a Surber sampler (mesh = 300 µ and area = 90...
